About
What it is
A distribution is a packaged version of Plone that arrives configured for a particular purpose. This one is built for public-facing websites: the sites an organisation shows to the outside world. When a new site is created from it, the theme, the content types, the editing tools and the default settings are all put in place in a single step, so the starting point is a working site rather than an empty one.
Who it is for
The distribution is aimed at the people who run a website day to day: editors who write and publish pages, communications teams responsible for how the site reads and looks, and administrators who manage accounts and permissions. Ordinary editorial work requires no development effort and no technical knowledge beyond the editing interface itself.
How you work with it
Pages are assembled from blocks. You add a block for each element you need — a passage of text, an image, a teaser pointing at another page, a grid of several items, a listing that fills itself automatically — and arrange them in the order you want. Content types cover the recurring kinds of material a public site holds: pages, news items, events, files, links and people.
Publishing runs through Plone's review workflow, so drafts stay private until someone with the right permission publishes them. Sign-in can be handled by the site itself or delegated to an existing identity provider, and a site can be set up in more than one language.
Where to go next
Features walks through what the distribution can do, one capability at a time. The source code and release notes are published at kitconcept/kitconcept-website.
